Daily Nourishing Reflection #1: Welcome to the Intentionally Equitable Hospitality series – let’s introduce ourselves!

Welcome to the Intentionally Equitable Hospitality (IEH) series for May 2024! We’re so excited to have you with us.

Every day, we’ll be sending an email and posting to our website what we’re calling “Daily Nourishing Reflections”. These will include

  1. A daily facilitation tip, usually a brief video by an experienced facilitator with their key tips and strategies. The first one today is an intro to IEH, future ones will have more concrete moves and dispositions. We encourage you to reflect on this video however you prefer – on your own, with colleagues, on Slack, on the SPLOT (see below).
  2. A daily activity we’re encouraging you to do if you have time and interest
  3. A daily short list of additional material related to the day’s theme
  4. One more thing: occasionally, we’ll feel like we want to add some additional tips, and you’ll find them in this section

Daily Facilitation Tip: What is Intentionally Equitable Hospitality by Miaha (Mia Zamora & Maha Bali)

In this video, Mia and Maha describe the praxis of Intentionally Equitable Hospitality (IEH) and its four phases.

Daily Activity: Asynchronous Introductions

We’d love to get to know you all, and we want to make sure that you get to introduce yourself on your own terms, and have time to absorb everyone else’s introductions, which is difficult to do when we are in a live session with anything more than 10 people. So we’d like to invite you to introduce yourself in a creative way, asynchronously, and put your introductions up on our shared website for reflections, where you can look at other people’s introductions when you have time to reflect and respond. You can introduce yourself any way you like, but here are two ideas you may wish to choose from:

  1. An AltCV (instructions here) – this is the opposite of a traditional CV because it gives you full agency to highlight what matters to YOU that you want to share with us. It can be an image, a piece of creative writing like a poem, or an audio recording or video.
  2. A Trading Card (instructions here) – this is one version of an AltCV but gives you more structure and encourages you to draw something by hand then upload it

Once you’ve created your introduction, please post it on our shared website for reflections, which does not require login (it’s called a SPLOT): https://reflect.equityunbound.org. You will find trading cards of participants from a previous Intentionally Equitable Hospitality series in 2023 at this link. Can you find some past trading cards of some of this year’s IEH series facilitators?

Here is an example of a trading card by Maha Bali, with a video for instructions on how to post yours to the site. Please remember to add your email as you post your introduction so you can get notified if others comment on it.

Daily Optional Additional Material

There is a lot on Intentionally Equitable Hospitality out there already, but for today, we’ve got two light optional ones for you to explore:

One More Thing: Accessibility Tip: How to Create Alternative Text

You will notice that the SPLOT asks you to write alternative text for your images so that someone who is visually impaired and using a screen reader can know what the images represent. If you are not familiar with how to create alternative text in various spaces, watch this video to learn more:
