An interactive critical AI literacy workshop that uses the concept of khilafa (stewardship) as a framework for thinking about AI responsibility, guided by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s visionary story “Sultana’s Dream.”The workshop offers practical tools for understanding AI systems while centering values of justice, accountability, and collective wisdom.

The workshop will explore how the concept of Khilafa (stewardship) can serve as a framework to think critically about the power, values and social structures embedded in AI systems and explore how principles of accountability and collective responsibility can reshape them. Using Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s feminist utopia “Sultana’s Dream” as an anchor text, we will examine how principles of ethical stewardship can guide us towards imagining and creating more just, equitable technological futures.

Participants will engage in guided discussions, small-group activities and creative reflection exercises. By the end of the session they will leave with tools for critically engaging AI and imaginative strategies for rethinking what ethical and equitable technologies might look like in practice. No technical expertise is required, just a sense of imagination and curiosity!
