In this session, we will (re)visit key concepts around accessibility and introduce different approaches including accommodation, universal design and inclusive design. For each of these approaches, we will discuss the underlying assumptions embedded in the approach and consider the benefits and deficits of each. We will spend time exploring each of the three principles of Universal Design for Learning with examples. We will also reflect on where we hold power to make change and apply these principles, and where contextual constraints may prevent us from fully enacting inclusive design. Participants will break out into design groups and are invited to work on their own educational materials or on exemplars provided in the session. We will end the session by imagining more inclusive approaches to educational design without constraints.
Session duration: 120 minutes
