In this session, we will start with an empathy mapping activity that allows participants to examine their own perspective on access barriers and disability. Together, we will define the concepts of Access, Accessibility, and Disability. We will discuss different models of disability and how these models influence the classroom environment and perceptions of accessibility. We will compare how the medical model views disability as an individual deficit while the social model views disability as a result of social designs; we will also explore the potential for a disability justice approach to accessibility. Building on these ideas, we will examine examples of physical, social, digital, and educational designs to identify access barriers and consider both responsive and proactive ways of addressing these barriers. At the end, we will introduce the idea of witnessing and encourage participants to start paying more attention to the accessibility of the social, digital, physical and educational designs that they encounter in their daily lives. There will be a place for continued discussion following the session.
