Identity exploration and collaborative autoethnography can be powerful tools to gain insight into how socio-political, sociohistorical and sociocultural landscapes shape our lived experiences, how we engage with the world around us, and how we view ourselves and possibilities for achieving agency for transformation. In this hands-on workshop, we will focus in particular on our transnational identities and their intersections with other identities to help us understand how we are affected by and may be complicit in perpetuating the profoundly unjust power dynamics implicated in systemic mechanisms of oppression. Such understanding can be a catalyst for action for social justice in both personal and educational settings.
In the first stage you will be guided through several identity exploration and collaborative discussion activities to gain insight into how your lived experiences with transnationality and intersections with other identity markers have shaped you. In the second stage, informed by insights gained in the first stage, you will engage in collaborative autoethnography (a way of studying the self in relation to society) to formulate action plans for drawing on your transnationality to promote individual and community transformation for educational justice. The main activities of the workshop will include:
– Mapping your transnational identities
– Storytelling about critical incidents involving transnationality
– Artistic expression of what brings you joy
– Collaborative autoethnography and poster making: From insight to action plan
You can engage in the activities digitally or physically. If you prefer physical engagement, then we recommend you have paper, pen, and art supplies (such as coloured pens or pencils).
