This session is designed as a way to introduce participants to complex social justice concepts including privilege, power, positionality, intersectionality and bias. The workshop will provide various opportunities for independent reflection through supported prompts and collective reflection through discussion, collaborative brainstorming, and anonymous polling activities. All activities are optional and participants will have choice in when/if they use to share. The session will end with a discussion on approaches to navigating power imbalances in course design and delivery.
Within this session, participants will:
– Examine the concepts of social identity, privilege, positionality, and intersectionality.
– Reflect on your own social identities and how they relate to social power and privilege.
– Reflect on how positionality shapes your perception of the world, society’s perception of you, and your ability to participate in the world broadly and within educational environments specifically.
– Discuss ways of navigating power imbalances in the classroom caused by social positioning.
Session duration: 2 hours
Note: The majority of this session will not be recorded. Some of the information delivery pieces could be recorded and shared, but the individual and collective reflections will not be recorded.
