Themes & Topics

Poetry can foster belonging, support wellbeing, and offer space for reflection. It has long helped people process experiences – from frontline workers and marginalised communities to teachers and students. In higher education, poetry can ease stress, support self-expression, and deepen our understanding of ourselves and others. This workshop introduces poetry as a reflective tool for anyone working in higher education. Through free verse, haiku, and other forms, you will explore how poetry can help articulate your thoughts, emotions, and professional experiences – whether or not you have written poetry before. We will also consider how poetry can be used to reflect on teaching, build empathy, and create connection across roles. The session is open to all – teachers, learners, third-space professionals, and support staff – and may be of particular interest to those exploring reflective practice, staff wellbeing, creative pedagogy, or alternative research methods. No prior experience is needed, and sharing is always optional.
