Why do faculty discussions about AI sometimes end at an impasse? Over the past four decades, scholars have proposed a series of meta-orientations towards education. We simply call them “teaching philosophies.” These philosophies capture why teachers teach and why researchers in education research. Some of us focus most on academics, others more on humanistic inquiry, others on social justice, and others still on the economic benefits of education. This session adapts these philosophies and explores their implications for educators’ stances towards artificial intelligence. This session both explores these ideas and involves participation and reflection by attendees as we map the relationship between teaching philosophies and engagement with artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the session serves to support educators and researchers in facilitating constructive collegial engagement with artificial intelligence at their own institutions.
